Channel crossings can’t be stopped in the water

In December 2021, as the Nationality and Borders Bill returned to the House of Commons, previous immigration minister and RAMP Principal Caroline Nokes comments on the ongoing situation in the Channel. In an article published by The Times, she argues that small boat crossings are not a problem that will be solved on the water alone, noting that this approach puts the lives of both asylum seekers and Border Force personnel at risk. The article also highlights the exorbitant costs of the government’s offshoring asylum processing plans, calling instead for the introduction of safe and legal routes which will help undercut smugglers and traffickers.
