The Borders Bill won’t just harm refugees – it will scrap humanitarian protection too

As the Nationality and Borders Bill has returned to the House of Commons this week, RAMP Principal Olivia Blake MP, in a piece for the Independent Voices, draws attention to the government’s proposed changes to humanitarian protection for those who do not qualify under the legal definition of the refugee, but are nevertheless fleeing war and violence. In a written exchange with the Immigration Minister, she learned that the government is planning to offer only a temporary permission to stay to this group of vulnerable people, akin to that which would be granted to Group 2 refugees under the Nationality and Borders Bill. Olivia Blake asks colleagues in the Commons to oppose the Bill and calls parliamentarians to ensure that universal routes to protection are still available for all those in danger of violence.
