RAMP Associates in Lords Debate on Small Boat Crossings

On 13th November a Lord's Chamber debate on Small Boat Crossing took place following an urgent question in the House of Commons on 6th November.

RAMP Associate Lord German took part in the debate and emphasised the need to address the root cause of dangerous journeys by providing safe, legal routes for asylum applications to undermine people smugglers.
He suggested pre-screening individuals from high-success-rate countries like Afghanistan and Syria and issuing travel permits to allow direct asylum applications in the UK, enabling the government to regulate and predict asylum seeker numbers more effectively.

RAMP Associate Baroness Lister also mentioned safe routes. She highlighted that while safe routes may not stop all Channel crossings, refugee organisations argue they would reduce them. She urged the government to consider suggestions for safe routes more positively, following similar calls from other peers.
