Olivia Blake MP Reflects on Brook House Inquiry and Detention Reform
Olivia Blake MP wrote an article following the one year anniversary of the Brook House Inquiry Report.
The inquiry report was published on 19th September 2023 and was set up to investigate the decisions, actions and circumstances surrounding the mistreatment of individuals who were detained at Brook House Immigration Removal Centre shown in the BBC Panorama programme “Under-Cover: Britain’s Immigration Secrets”, aired on 4 September 2017.
In her article Blake shares her reflections on the urgent need for reform. She criticises the failure to address systemic issues in immigration detention, as evidenced by ongoing abuses at other centres like Harmondsworth. She highlights the mistreatment of vulnerable detainees, including refugees and trafficking victims, and calls for the swift implementation of the Brook House Inquiry’s recommendations. Blake advocates for community-based alternatives to detention and the protection of vulnerable groups, emphasising that now is the time for real change.
